Classification of ion counters

1. Classified by the detector

An ion detector detects the voltage or electric current caused by the electric charge ions posses (assuming all the ions have one gained/lost electron) and convert it to the ion count, which is used by many ion counters. Dual cylindrical detector (aka. Air suction detector)
Dual cylindrical detector (aka. Air suction detector) This detector (aka. Gerdien capacitor) has been used by a lot of manufacturers and research institutions for many years. It is one of the most popular ion detectors.

Parallel flat plate detector
Parallel flat plate detector Several ion counters using this detector have been developed during the past few years. It is widely used for compact ion counters due to the small dimensions.

GM tube detector GM (Geiger-Müller) tube detector
This detector detects radiation and converts it to the negative ion count. The air is ionized when radiation is emitted. It can only detect negative ions generated by radioactive materials.

Single electrode detector (aka. Ion checker) Single electrode detector (aka. Ion checker)
This detector is designed for test operations. It only detects presence of high density ions and cannot measure ion counts.

2. Classified by the measurement accuracy

Highly accurate ion counters Highly accurate ion counters
These high-end ion counters are precisely designed, assembled and adjusted in order to provide highly accurate ion measurement for R&D purposes. Some detect as low as 1(pcs/cc).

Standard ion counters Standard ion counters
Measurement accuracy is not so high as that of highly accurate ion counters. However, these affordable ion counters can be used to understand an ionization tendency as they are designed according to the measurement principles in contrast to those using the single electrode detector (aka. Ion checkers). If measurement accuracy is within tolerance compared to highly accurate ion counters, it is good for many applications.
